Urea
Clinical indications
Urea is formed by the degradation of ammonia at the level of the liver as a waste product of acid metabolism. It is released into the blood and then eliminated in the urine after filtration in the kidneys.
Testing for urea levels is an important indicator of kidney function, proteins introduced with food and the level of hydration.
The urea test can also be performed on 24-hour urine (uricosuria).
