Prothrombin time (PT)

Clinical indications

Prothrombin is a plasma glycoprotein synthesised by the liver involved in the blood clotting process.

Testing for prothrombin makes it possible to evaluate the effectiveness of coagulation.

Assessment of prothrombin time is prescribed in the case of taking anticoagulant drugs, allowing to verify their functioning and their effectiveness in preventing the formation of clots.

Usually the prothrombin time is expressed by an index, INR (International Normalised Ratio), which takes into account the sensitivity of the thromboplastin reagent used.
