Prolactin

Clinical indications

Prolactin, a hormone produced by the pituitary gland, is important for the production of breast milk after childbirth and for the regulation of the menstrual cycle in women.

Testing of prolactin levels is usually requested in case of an irregular or absent menstrual cycle (amenorrhea) or abnormal loss of milk from the breast (galactorrhoea).

In the case of infertility, it is tested together with the hormones FSH, LH, progesterone and oestradiol.
