Haemoglobin electrophoresis
Clinical indications
Hemoglobin electrophoresis allows the separation of hemoglobin fractions for quantitative and qualitative evaluation. This test allows us to identify both those affected and those carrying genetic anomalies affecting one of the four globin chains of hemoglobin, the hemoglobinopathies. Hemoglobin electrophoresis is performed especially in cases of family history of sickle cell anemia or thalassemia and in couples usually together with iron, ferritin and blood count.
