ERYTHROCYTE SEDIMENTATION RATE (ESR)

Clinical indications

Carcino-embryonic antigen (CEA) is a protein secreted in large quantities by the cells of various cancers such as breast, liver, thyroid, pancreas, colorectal, lung, stomach and ovary cancer. CEA is therefore used as a neoplastic marker.
Testing the levels of carcino-embryonic antigen can also highlight the presence of diseases of the abdominal organs, for example, due to contraindications to the intake of drugs such as anticoagulants, and non-cancer diseases such as intestinal polyposis, hepatitis, colitis, emphysema and pneumonia.

In addition, this parameter is higher in smokers.
