Anticorpi anti-Citomnegalovirus (IgG e IgM)
Cytomegalovirus is a very common virus that is often responsible for asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic infections that resolve spontaneously and have no long-term consequences. The virus, however, can be very dangerous if contracted during pregnancy because, in this case, it can be transmitted to the foetus with potentially serious consequences: it can affect the central nervous system or cause mental retardation, congenital deafness, chorioretinitis, liver, spleen and lung problems or convulsions.
In view of the danger of cytomegalovirus infection in pregnancy, the testing of levels of specific antibodies (immunoglobulins) is particularly important during the gestational period.
The IgG positivity against Cytomegalovirus indicates that the virus in question no longer represents a serious threat as immunity has been acquired due to a previous exposure that represents an indirect protection for the foetus.
IgM, on the other hand, are the immunoglobulins that are formed when an acute infection is in progress, thus signalling that the disease is present.
