Beta 2 microglobulins
Clinical indications
Beta 2 microglobulins are specific globular proteins present in plasma. Testing their levels provides useful information on renal function. When glomeruli and/or renal tubules are damaged, beta 2 microglobulin concentrations increase due to the decreased ability to reabsorb proteins.
The level of serum beta 2 microglobulin also increases in cases of inflammation, autoimmune disorders and infectious diseases. The increase may also be related to a neoplastic process.
